The "Problem-Solver’s" Constraint Menu

This is the cornerstone tool for a CLA coach. Instead of a book of drills, it's a "menu" of solutions.

  • What it is: A categorized PDF guide where coaches look up the problem their team is having, and it provides a list of specific constraints to apply to a scrimmage to fix it.

  • How it works:

    • Problem Section: "Team is over-dribbling and missing open cutters."

    • Constraint Solutions: 1) Offense limited to 2 dribbles maximum per touch. 2) Points only count if the assist came from the paint. 3) Must complete 3 passes before shooting.

  • Why it’s "Reformation": It stops the coach from thinking, "What drill do I run?" and trains them to think, "How do I design the environment so the game teaches the solution?"

The "Cues & Choices" Player Self-Reflection Worksheet

If you want to reform the brain of the player, you need tools that engage them off the court.

  • What it is: A simple, one-page worksheet coaches can give to players after a game or hard practice, or use during film sessions.

  • How it works: It doesn't ask about technique ("Did I follow through?"). It asks about perception.

    • Question example: "Think of a turnover you had today. What 'cue' did the defense show you that you might have misread?"

    • Question example: "Describe a moment today where you saw a 2v1 advantage develop. What decision did you make to exploit it?"

  • Why it’s "Reformation": It trains the player's brain to value perception over appearance, reinforcing the on-court work you are doing.

The "Reformation Manifesto: Drills vs. Decisions" Whitepaper

This is your foundational document. It's the "Trojan Horse" piece that explains the why.

  • What it is: A sharply written, professional PDF that scientifically and philosophically dismantles traditional drill culture and presents the CLA alternative.

  • How it works: It uses side-by-side comparisons: "Old Way: 3-Man Weave (Looks clean, teaches zero decisions, zero defense)" vs. "New Way: 3v2 Continuous Transition (Looks messy, teaches advantage recognition, constant decision making)." It touches lightly on the "Renewed Mind" concept of challenging established patterns.

  • Why it’s "Reformation": It provides the intellectual ammunition a coach needs to defend this new approach to parents, athletic directors, or players who question why practice looks different.

No Waiting in Line

Traditional drills leave kids standing. In SSG League, everyone is active, engaged, and getting reps.

Maximum Decisions

3v3 creates 300% more ball touches and decision-making opportunities than structured 5v5.

Live Coaching

The "Whistle Teaches" method means instant feedback within the flow of the game.

The Reformation

THE REFORMATION
OF BASKETBALL

Basketball education is stuck in the past. We are reforming the game by moving away from "drill culture" and toward an approach where players solve problems against live defense.

In the SSG League, Coaches are Refs and Refs are Coaches. We use the whistle to teach within the chaos. We focus heavily on Early Modifications—tweaking the game environment in real-time to challenge players instantly.

1

Advantage Based Development

We don't train neutral situations. We train players to create, maintain, and extend advantages. Every game is designed to force offensive aggression.

2

Action Based Basketball Principles

We teach universal actions, not memorized plays. Players master Ball Screens, Screen Aways, Back Cuts, Post Entries, Drags, Flare Screens, Princeton Actions, UCLA High Post Cuts, and Flex Options.

3

The "Guardrails" System

In academic terms, they are "constraints," but we call them Guardrails. A Guardrail tells the team exactly what the rules are for that specific game. It defines the focus for player and team development, forcing the desired skill to emerge naturally within those boundaries.

4

The Underdog Defense

We teach a tenacious Man-to-Man Helpside Team Defense known as the "Underdog Defense." Players learn gap integrity, rotation, and how to function as a cohesive unit to disrupt the offense.

The Whistle Teaches

We freeze the chaos to reveal the logic.

Volunteer Education

TRAINING THE "TEACHING OFFICIAL"

We require local volunteers and coaches to undergo our specific training. We don't just teach officiating mechanics; we teach how to instruct while officiating.

Elementary Level: The Classroom

At this age, the whistle is a pause button for education. We want to emphasize why a call was made so both teams learn.

"If a player picks up the ball and runs, we don't just signal 'Travel'. We stop and explain: 'You lifted your pivot foot before dribbling.' By pointing that out, every player on the court learns the rule."

6th-12th Grade: Guardrail Guardians

At the middle and high school levels, officials focus on helping the team stay within the Guardrails (constraints) and recognizing specific Actions from our principles.

"The official isn't just watching for fouls; they are watching for the 'UCLA Cut' or the 'Side Post Entry'. They actively cue players to recognize the action available within the game's constraints."

Real-World Application: Calling the Action

Example 1: Side Post Action

In a 3v3 context, a player might flash to the Elbow. We teach officials to recognize this alignment. Once the ball is entered to the elbow, players must create cuts and screens based on that week's Guardrails. The official ensures the entry is clean and the subsequent action is legal.

Example 2: UCLA High Post

The Point Guard enters the ball to the Wing. The High Post sets a UCLA Screen for the Point Guard, who cuts to the low block. Our officials are trained to see this sequence developing and ensure the screen is set legally and the timing is correct.

* Note: These are just two examples. There are hundreds of actions (Princeton, Flex, Horns, etc.) in our curriculum. We train your officials on the specific actions relevant to your league's schedule.

SAMPLE 4-WEEK FORMAT

The SSG League curriculum is dynamic and constantly evolving. It is built entirely on our Action Based Basketball Principles. While the breakdown below represents a core progression, we continually introduce new actions and constraints to ensure players are always challenged.

01

Creating the Advantage

Focus on 1v1 interactions and starting the offense with an edge.

  • 1v1 Constraints
  • 2v1 Advantage Starts
  • Triggering the "Domino"
02

Space & Decision

Learning to use space without the ball and making the "extra" pass.

  • 2v2 Cut Throat
  • 3v2 Disadvantage Defense
  • Constraint: No Dribble
03

Complexity & Chaos

Handling multiple defenders, fast decisions, and communication.

  • 3v3 FIBA Style
  • 3v4 "Grit" Games
  • Constraint: 7-Second Shot Clock
04

Competition Week

Applying skills in high-intensity unequal matchups for the championship.

  • 4v4 Small Court
  • 4v3 Power Play
  • Tournament of Champions

PROVEN AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS

This isn't just a theory. NCAA and Professional teams are using this exact Advantage Based philosophy to develop elite decision-makers. We bring this pro-level development directly to your gym.

For Head Varsity Coaches

WE SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE.
WE FIT YOUR SYSTEM.

We are not AAU coaches. We are not just trainers. We are Basketball Coaches and Program Builders. We understand the complexity of running a varsity program, and our goal is to be a true partner to your school.

When you bring an SSG League event to your school, we sit down with you first. We discuss your offensive and defensive philosophy to ensure the actions and advantages we drill in the small-sided games directly translate to your Friday nights.

"Our goal is not to be arrogant, but to be so thorough that everyone involved—players, coaches, referees, and parents—will have forgotten more basketball than most people ever know."

Customized Action Examples

1

Running The Princeton?

We will build SSG's focused specifically on the Chin Series or Point Series, forcing players to master backdoors and over-the-top entries.

2

Running The "Buna" Offense?

Honoring the legacy of Coach Cotton Robinson, we will load the league with heavy Ball Screen Actions and continuity concepts to match that style.

3

Running Dribble Drive?

We focus entirely on gap penetration, drop-offs to the Dunker Spot, and the crucial drift/lift logic from the corners to the wings.

Parent & Fan Expectations

Zero Tolerance for Negativity

Any negative behavior from the bleachers or anywhere in the facility will not be tolerated. You will be given one warning. On the second offense, you will be asked to leave. This environment is for the kids, not the adults.

Respect the Volunteers

Do not complain about officials. They have a tough job, and they are often volunteers from your own school, church, or community. When there is negativity, it creates an environment where learning cannot take place because you are making the game about you.

Don't be a "Monday Morning Point Guard"

We all hate the painful truth, but yelling from the stands is not helpful. Be supportive. Be loyal. If you want to be involved, volunteer. We need active helpers, not critics.

Faith-Based Principles

We operate on biblical principles. We react to negativity from a ministry perspective. If your stance is "I paid for my kid to have a great experience" as an excuse for poor behavior, we will gladly refund your money and kindly ask you to leave.

"Coaches are not perfect. Referees are not perfect. Let's work in unison to build a supportive community for our players."
